The peasant culture, folklore and traditions of the 92 municipalities in medieval Umbria, defined not by chance “city region” for its balanced distribution of economic activities, foster tourism already rooted for a heavily steeped history of art and spirituality. Folklore and culture are another way of expressing the popular memory of a past integrally preserved, translated in everyday life as in few other places in Italy. Flipping through the calendar of events that animate the city of Umbria leaps to the eye the variety and multiplicity of traditional events along with the most diverse expressions of contemporary creativity. There are many reasons to party and every event is for local communities an opportunity waiting to confirm identity and roots, for the tourist, it becomes an opportunity to participate in the most genuine and heartfelt expressions of Umbrian culture and folklore. The typical local products are the focal point of festivals that are tied to great culinary traditions: black and white truffles, the chocolate, and fine wines. Spectacular atmosphere of the past can be felt in the events related to the nature or religious festivals cycles, like the celebrations in honor of San Francisco, Santa Clara and Santa Rita, the Festival of Palombella in Orvieto and flower festival of Corpus Domini in Spello. Not just commemorations; they are grand events where passion collective involvement and give authentic vitality to rites of pagan origin mixed with old Christian devotions, a chivalrous challenges of medieval societies, or to the propitiatory ceremonies of contadino.Si world greets the ‘arrival of spring in May Day in Assisi, and summer is celebrated in the Water Festival in Piediluco.
